What Brown Fat Does

BAT burns calories to generate heat via UCP1-mediated non-shivering thermogenesis. PET-CT shows activation below 19C skin temperature.

The Evidence

A 2014 Diabetes study: sleeping at 19C for 4 months increased BAT volume 42%. Acute activation at 17C increases expenditure 80-400 kcal depending on individual BAT volume.

Protocol

  • 14-19C ambient for 10-15+ minutes
  • Daily exposure for 2-6 weeks recruits new BAT
  • Peak activation just ABOVE shivering threshold

What Doesn't Work

Brief cold showers (30-60s) don't reach BAT activation threshold. The counter-regulatory warming response kicks in too fast.

The Bottom Line

BAT activation is real but requires sustained cold at the right intensity — not brief cold showers.
