NaoX Wave — In-Ear EEG Earbuds That Track Your Brain in Real Time

NaoX Wave brings clinical-grade EEG sensing into consumer earbuds. The underlying tech has FDA clearance for medical use. The consumer version does not. Here is what matters.

NaoX Wave — In-Ear EEG Earbuds That Track Your Brain in Real Time

This is a conceptual, evidence-based assessment. We have not physically tested this product.

What It Is

NaoX Wave is a consumer wellness earbuds platform that uses in-ear EEG sensors to track brain activity in real time. It provides metrics for focus, relaxation, sleep analytics, and cognitive performance — all from sensors embedded in everyday earbuds.

The Science

NaoX Technologies has a separate product — the NaoX Link (NX01) — that received FDA 510(k) clearance as the first in-ear EEG system intended for clinical use. The clearance was supported by multi-center clinical studies comparing in-ear EEG recordings against gold-standard 64-electrode scalp caps. The research demonstrated reliable capture of alpha rhythms, sleep spindles, and slow waves during both wakefulness and sleep.

The company has ongoing collaborations with major medical institutions including Necker Hospital and the Rothschild Foundation Hospital in Paris, studying pediatric epilepsy, focal epilepsy, and Alzheimer's disease.

What the Evidence Supports

  • The underlying EEG sensor technology is clinically validated and FDA-cleared (in the Link model)
  • In-ear EEG can reliably detect brainwave patterns comparable to scalp electrodes
  • The company has genuine clinical research partnerships and ongoing U.S. trials

What the Evidence Doesn't Support

  • The Wave consumer product is NOT FDA-cleared — it is a wellness device
  • Consumer-grade focus and relaxation metrics are not clinically validated endpoints
  • Real-time cognitive performance coaching from single-channel EEG lacks published evidence

Practical Considerations

  • Price: Premium pricing typical of neurotech earbuds
  • Form Factor: Standard earbuds with embedded sensors — worn naturally
  • FDA Status: NaoX Link (medical) is FDA-cleared; NaoX Wave (consumer) is NOT
  • Data: Companion app for brain state tracking and trends

Bottom Line

NaoX has a legitimate scientific pedigree — the same team that built an FDA-cleared clinical EEG device. That puts the Wave in a different category than most consumer neurotech. However, the consumer product itself does not carry FDA clearance, and the wellness metrics it provides (focus, relaxation) are not clinically validated endpoints. The technology is real and well-supported. The question is whether consumer-grade interpretation of that data delivers actionable value. We would be more enthusiastic with published data specifically on the Wave's consumer algorithms.
